Exchange rates | NY

Thursday 20th – Sunday 23rd October 2016

Campbell Works is delighted to be participating in Exchange Rates. Now in its second year Exchange Rates is an international biennale for collaborative exhibitions for galleries and projects in and around Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York City.

London. NY. Newcastle. San Francisco. Munich. Manchester. Marseille. Bogota. Detroit. Jersey City. Leiden. Odense.

Exchange Rates: The Bushwick International Expo is a collaborative platform that merges the visions of artist-run and emerging galleries in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with those of kindred galleries and itinerant projects from around the world. Artists and curators on the visit are hosted by galleries in Bushwick for a concentrated weekend of exhibitions, performances and talks, forging new links and common ground between artists and curators who otherwise might never have known about one another’s projects—much less worked together to mount exhibitions in a most artistically active neighbourhood in Brooklyn.

The unofficial operative credo in Bushwick is one that prioritizes artists, curation and collaboration over strictly art-market interests. From commercial to non-profit to at least sustainably profitable, Bushwick galleries vary a great deal. Consistent elements among them all, however, are curatorial rigour, a DIY ethos and collaborative programming. By convening similarly driven representatives with their Bushwick counterparts in novel ways, Exchange Rates engenders creative traction between galleries, artists, curators and members of the public.

This second edition of Exchange Rates will feature 44 galleries and projects from 14 cities around the world. The expo will include exhibitions, performances and talks from Thursday through Sunday, with late-night hours in certain venues on both Friday and Saturday.

Sluice__ is an art initiative run by and artist (Karl England), a curator (Charlie Levine) and an educationalist (Ben Street). Sluice__ was formed as a provocation and foregrounds criticality as a central concern. Sluice__ strategically adopts structures in order to showcase artists, curators and emergent discourse, operating as a critical platform that takes on different guises—including a biennial art fair—to investigate the nature of art and its place in the world.

Theodore:Art Founded by Stephanie Theodore in 2010, Theodore:Art is a contemporary art gallery and consultancy presenting exhibitions of works by emerging and established artists from Europe and the US in a variety of settings and contexts.
